This coming winter season, the beautiful city of Gold Coast will be holding yet another incredible athletic event. Get on your feet and start running as our superb Main Beach family accommodation at De Ville Holiday Apartments welcomes determined runners at the biggest sporting event of the year – the 2011 Gold Coast Airport Marathon.
Due to its ever increasing popularity, the Gold Coast Airport Marathon is now a two day event and will take place on 2-3 July 2011. The Marathon has five race programs which include a marathon, half marathon, 10km run, 5km run/walk, 4km junior dash and a 2km junior dash. The starting line for the marathon will be at Southport Broadwater Parklands and will set out to a southern turnaround at Burleigh Heads.
Now on its 33rd year, the historic Gold Coast Airport Marathon was inaugurated in 2 September 1979 at the suburb of Evandale. The marathon event was first started by the Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise Central as part of a health awareness campaign for the Gold Coast. The 1st Gold Coast Marathon consisted of six-lap loop course and only had 691 runners. By 2009, there were more than 23,000 local and international participants across all events. After three decades, the race still continues to draws in numerous runners coming from all walks of life.
Aside from the race day itself, the Gold Coast Airport Marathon will also have several Off-the-track activities such as the 2011 ASICS Sport and Leisure Expo which will be held over three days starting from 30 June at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. Marathon runners from our affordable apartments Main Beach will also have the chance to meet and greet sport legends Rob de Castella, Steve Moneghetti, Lee Troop and Pat Carroll at the AirAsia X Legends Lunch taking place on 2 July 2011 also at the GCCEC.
